The 2nd International Conference on Agrarian Reform and Rural Development (ICARRD+20) is a very important space where governments, social organizations, rural communities, and academia come together to discuss the future of the countryside and how to improve life in rural areas.

What are the objectives?

1

Analyze Land Tenure

Examine the current state of land tenure around the world—how land is distributed, who makes decisions about it, and what impact this has on our lives and development goals. Land is not only an economic resource; it also has cultural, spiritual, ecological, and community value.

2

Review International Agreements

Assess whether international agreements on land—such as the Voluntary Guidelines on the Governance of Tenure (VGGT)—are truly being implemented and whether they are helping to make access to land fairer and more sustainable.

3

Share Experiences

Exchange experiences on agrarian reform and rural development across different countries to learn from what has worked (and what has not) and to build pathways toward an agrarian reform that meets today’s challenges.

4

Promote Cooperation

Promote cooperation between countries and organizations, joining efforts for agrarian reform, food security and sovereignty, rural development, and environmental care, with a focus on social and climate justice.

5

Recognize Communities

Acknowledge the fundamental role of rural communities in caring for the land and territory, and ensure their active participation in decisions about how these resources are used and governed.

What will it be like?

It won’t be an event where only the usual “experts” speak.
It will be built with the voices of those who work day by day in the territories.
The focus will be on open and respectful dialogue, not on formal conferences.
We want to gather ideas and proposals based on real experience, not just from behind desks.

"We are convinced that we will hold the best possible Conference, so that we can establish a clear roadmap to feed the world, build peace, and address climate change. Twenty years after the first Conference in Brazil, Latin America can once again be the ground for a Global South alliance, bringing hope and resilience in the face of the crises we are enduring."
